What is Aquatic Physical Therapy?

Aquatic Therapy is nothing more than an individual physical therapy exercise session monitored by a trained professional. In many ways it is like traditional or "on land" P.T. that takes place in a specially designed warm water therapy pool. The effect of the water is to reduce the weight that gravity forces your joints to bear while you exercise. The deeper the water-the less you weigh. It is really quite simple.

Will I need any other treatment?

Aquatic Therapy is most frequently used in combination with other kinds of physical therapy treatment. Exactly what you need is determined by your physician in consultation with your therapist after you have been fully evaluated. The evaluation occurs during your initial visit. Your individual program is designed to meet your needs and is continually modified as your condition improves.

What do I wear? Will my hair get wet?

Most people wear swim suits or exercise shorts. Actual swimming is rare, so hair typically stays dry. Everyone showers before entering the pool and we even provide shower caps, if you desire one.

Is it covered by my Insurance.

Almost certainly "Yes!" If physical therapy is covered, aquatic P.T. is usually covered, too. "Before we treat every patient, we check with their insurer to verify coverage."

Does it Hurt?

No! Because the weight bearing on the joints is greatly reduced, pain is noticeably decreased. In the water, the rule is "If you experience pain-Stop!" The grunts, groans, and grimaces so typical in the gym are virtually absent in the therapy pool.

Sounds great! What do I do now?

Give us a call. We will make an appointment, get your insurance information and call you back as soon as we verify the extent of your coverage. If time permits, we will even send you the patient information forms, so you can complete them at your convenience or you may print them out here.
